About your tutor

My name is Jennifer Evans. I have always enjoyed working with languages. I started learning French at the age of 10, Spanish from the age of 12 and German from the age of 14. I studied all three languages at A level, and went on to do a combined honours degree in French and Spanish at Newnham College, Cambridge. More recently I have been learning Italian. In spite of this seemingly academic background, my interest is primarily in the practical use of language, and I am fascinated by the processes involved in language acquisition. I am a fully-qualified teacher (PGCE - FE), with over twenty years' experience of teaching, mostly in the adult sector. I believe that I am able to put people at their ease, and that my patience and understanding will help anyone along the way, not just the most able. I have experience teaching people of all ages, from 1 to 92! Here is what some of my learners have said:
"The teaching has been excellent, fun, friendly, useful, relevant..."
"Jenny is an excellent and enthusiastic teacher who manages to meet the needs of a variety of ability levels."
"I admire Jenny's enthusiasm and energy, which she has maintained throughout the course....."
"I achieved much more than I expected."
My language courses
Learning a language can be fun and hugely rewarding. Whether you are completely new to learning a language or whether you simply want to brush up before a trip abroad, you should be able to find something to suit your needs. I currently teach French and Spanish to advanced level and Italian for beginners. Most of my teaching is done in small groups of about six people. This gives everyone the chance to do more speaking, and keeps the cost down for you. It also means you are more likely to be in a group with people at the same level as you, and with the same aims. But anything is possible, and you can have individual tuition, or something else specific to your needs; a few brush-up sessions with a friend or two, for example. I can also teach children, or help with preparation for GCSE and A level.
In line with the government requirement for all people working with children I have a valid CRB (Criminal Records Bureau) certificate.
Language learning cards
Together with two friends I am in the process of developing sets of cards, which I believe will help people learn languages. Frequent repetition and self-testing are necessary processes in language learning, but without a teacher present to correct mistakes it is often difficult for learners to know whether they are saying things correctly or not.
Our aim is to develop cards to help with every stage of language learning, and in particular to help fix patterns in language which are particularly difficult to remember (eg. sequence and position of pronouns).
